I picked up my 2014 adv R sat before last and have done 800km so far...loving it! What an awesome bike. Apparently the air box has been modified on the 2014's and a prefilter installed as well. I will pull it apart in the near future and have a look inside to see if any dust/bugs etc are getting in.

I managed to drop the bike already while exploring off road in desaru...crash bars work well!

Thanks for the quick update motomuppet. Since you've dropped your bike, based on your experience, do you think an upper crashbar like the one below is necessary.

I think it depends. The stock crash bars did a great job protecting the bike on flat dirt (and it was a super slow...like almost standing still tip over), but if there had been rocks then the added protection of the bigger bars would help. If you plan on doing a lot of technical off road then yeah, go the full on roll cage approach. I figure I like my bike as light as possible and dont plan on doing hard core trails on the 1190 (I have a 250XC for that!) so the standard crash bars will hopefully suffice. I think the bash plate is a good idea though with the pipe exposed as it is.

On another note: I discovered that if you turn off traction control (in sport mode) and use a little clutch with a fistful of throttle at 90kmph the front wheel comes waaaaaaay off the ground...like if you are not careful it will flip you off the back...in third...at 90kmph

    Awesome.

These are 2 very different bike in nature. One is a (large) Supermoto and the other is an all-rounder tourer. I guess price difference is not significant. You should be asking yourself what type of ride are you into: long distance, off-road, daily riding, etc.

On a different note, I never believe in the "right" or "wrong" bike to get. At the end of the day, it all boils down to your gut feel. Go and have a try on both bikes, and see which one "connects" to you more. Kinda like choosing a girlfriend.

Thanx for e feedback bro. For my case it's more to daily riding from home to workplace to n fro. Dirtwheel has their last piece SMT to let go. I guess no more production for this year onwards. But minus point is e lack of fuel gauge. Whereas e Adv 1190 orange colour caught my attention, but they are selling their demo grey bike too. Still thinking though..

I would prefer the 2014 1190 adv over the 990 SMT.
    1. Updated engine. More power more torque.
    2. Bigger fuel tank. More efficient longer range.
    3. More touring accessories options.
    4. Better resale value(imo).
But I like the SMT look better. YMMV

Hmm. I too think e SMT looks better. Now got 3 choices.
    1) SMT
    2) Adv 1190 grey demo bike
    3) Adv 1190 2014 model new bike

Have had several KTM's before, and have a 2011 250XC currently for trail duties. Have become a huge fan of KTM bikes over the years.

Just wondering if the stalling issue has been identified and sorted? I saw on advrider.com that some bikes had fuel venting issues which could have something to do with the stalling?
Hi, may i know if e price is 36k flat otr? N what r e few sexy bits being thrown in? Is it buy direct from DW better?

Hi starkyy, your above questions are pretty subjective and relative, so it's hard to provide a clean cut reply. I can't comment too much in terms of maintenance cost, as I'm just into my 4000KM on this bike. Perhaps other bro can advise. Regarding parts availability, it all depend on what parts are you talking about. DW do keep some common spare parts. You cannot expect parts to be easily accessible like Japanese bikes. Similarly, if you ask about repair, it also depend on what breaks down. If it's common bike issues like tyres, battery, fuses, brakes, etc, most workshops would be able to manage. However, any problem that are too complex, particularly electronics, you would have to go back to the official dealer (Dirt Wheel).

Fuel efficiency is superb for a 1200cc bike. I can achieve above 21KM/L on SG highway, probably around 17-18KM/L for city riding.

hi journey, u have answered most of my queries. in terms of maintenance, is the oil change interval short eg. 3000km or longer? and any aftermarket streetlegal exhaust?

Haven't research much on aftermarket exhaust, and is happy with this exhaust. Check out this thread http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=902006. You may get more info there. Streetlegal or not, you may wanna do your own Googling

For a new 1190, oil change interval is recommended at every 15,000km, except for the 1st 1000km (run-in phase). Some riders experience the need to top up once or twice in the first 10,000km. I'm into my 4000km and the oil level still pretty healthy.

woah, that's a long interval. nice. thanks again journey for your inputs. actually, still researching on this orange beast. thinking which one to get after i get my class 2, between super tenere or ktm 1190 adventure although there are other obvious differences between these two.

Many ppl prefer to go DW cos they are the agent. And Ong is quite good and accommodating. Just need to talk to him and he might be able to give some perks. Of course as a the agent they will charge a premium and for PIs their prices must be lower to attract. So you have to decide.

Go to both DW and PI and ask... then compare yourself. I know Looi's has the ktm 1190 which is selling for different prices as DW.

S1 and M1 are actually same shop. And frankly.... If I can get my apple from the tree, why go all the way to the supermarket? Unless I have passion card lah... hahahaha....

I will go DW cos I know them... and I will pay a higher price for piece of mind.

Imptly is to Read the fine prints on the contract. Early penalties can be a killer. Some shops have different interpretation for OTR price too.

Loois offer for the 1190 is not attarctive at all. DW's offer still the best.

For either full cash or installment.

All bike shops will cap for COE, you can place a deposit but you might not get it.

Can owners of ADV1190 tell whether this bike is suitable for a 1.7m tall rider like me? Can both feet flatly touches the ground?

Hi Redzwan, I would strongly suggest that you go down to DW to have a test ride, and you have a better feel of the height. Unless you're more than 1.8m or very heavy, most of the adventure bike do not let you have both feet flat on ground.

There are 2 positions underneath the seat which you can set, one give you a seat height of 860mm and the other 875mm. You can check out Touratech seat. I think they sell one that is slightly lower than the stock seat. Mine is a non-R. I'm 1.75m and is tip-toeing.

Hi all. I'm thinking of getting the 1190. Does it come in base model or is there any top box and side box included?

    Hello guys.

I would like to ask on behalf of one of my friend.
If a gold wing is priced at 7.5k how many years will it be left usually?
Most probably more then 10 years I know. Roughly what plate will it be?

I'm 1.77m and can only get one foot down flat at a time on the 1190 R or I tiptoe just on both. Good for building up my balance skills!

I'm 1.74m and when I balanced the R upright, my 2 feet are dangling in the air. I'm kinda glad I've chosen the std 1190. Moreover, if I'm tall enough, the R will be my choice.

Thought I add something for people who maybe interested in the 1190Adv.

Tested the 1190. What a bike! Power is good even in rain mode. Very easy to manourve in low speeds which I liked. I didn't feel much engine braking which was weird to me given the power of the bike. I like the settings and buttons, very easy to operate even for a first timer.

Now the heat. I expect some heat given the slow speeds around the test route and our climate. The heat from under the seat is bearable but not the heat from the front header. It was burning up on my right shin area. I purposely wore bermudas by the way. I may buy if not for the crazy COE price!

U mean u encountered this thing while testriding the demo bike? Might be heat issues solved on the 2014 model?

Another thing I want to add is the bike dives too much under hard braking which made me feel like I was on my ex DR650. It was set to 1 rider and 1 bag. I grabbed the front brake to test the ABS and the front dived and I didn't like that. The ABS was great though. I would add some more front spring preload if I had my own.

Heat from exhaust header just above foot-pad, same for all 1190 models.

However on the 2014 1190, there is heat shield underseat (bigger for non-R and slightly smaller on R due to different seat design)

Who needs a tire iron and 32" axle nut combo wrench for removal of wheels for the 1190 or 990?

Brand new and should fit both bikes. Sold my bike so no use for it. Bought for $48. Sell for $30. Thanks. Pm me if keen.

    Hi all.

I have been a lurker in this particular thread for quite some time. I finally had the balls to book a test ride for the Adv 1190 from DW (Not the R model). I say balls because I knew the desires would be stronger once I took it for a ride. And daayyum!

"Uncle" Richard of DW is one helluva character. he made the test ride a breeze and a totally obligatory-free affair. Many ups to him. Anyway back to the bike itself, perhaps its best if I lay down the hotta and the notta in point form.

    HOT:
    - I took it off the main stand and it was a breeze. I used to ride an FJR and of course its not apple to apple but that damn Adv is light.
    - Perfect ergos. Bars just wide enough, yet not too high to impede on sporty riding.
    - I love scrolling through the menu functions. Intuitive buttons.
    - It was my first time riding a v-twin (or any dual cylinder for the matter) and I underestimated its low-down torque. I think the yelling went along the lines of "Siol ah!" (matrep). Thats what you get when you've been riding four cylinders for the last 9 years. That engine pulls (your neck) hard.
    - The bike handles and corners PRETTY close to that of a road-going bike. Considering its a 19" up front, I didn't notice like it was, esp taking that sharp right hand turn off SAFRA (if you know where I mean!). Perhaps the WP suspension is the real unsung hero of the bike.
    - Gearbox was pretty slick. I have heard the horrors (ok an exaggeration) of continental bikes compared to the slick Japs, however this box doesn't feel clunky or gibberish or whatever the angmohs always complain. The clutch was great too, light on your pcc hand.

    NOT:
    - The turn signal button is erm how shall i put it, pretty tight. I could barely feel the feedback through my fingers, didnt know whether I hit the signals not. This was without riding gloves on, I can only imagine what its like with them on.
    - There were some engine heat as the whole world has been complaining about, but c'mon its a giant trailie, you'd expect a dragon to breathe out fire not puke. Again this was not MUCH of an issue for me but not all of us handle heat well

This is just a mini rant and purely my opinion. It is a wonderful bike. of course I rode the bike in isolation and have yet to try the rivals in the class. But then again, the thing with bikes is once you know, you know. You know. Its something I will probably keep for quite the long term.

Many thanks to the vibrant Uncle Richard for the test ride. Now I gotta get back to coaxing the missus....
